20 Passenger Coach Bus
A 20 passenger coach bus is a forward-facing vehicle with a legal seated capacity of 20. Counting the driver it carries 21 people, which places it at or above the federal 16-person line that decides whether the driver must hold a commercial license with a passenger endorsement. Plan around roughly 19 passengers for comfort rather than filling every seat, and your contract will name the seating capacity of the vehicle we are sending you.

Seated versus comfortable
How many people really fit
20
Legal seated capacity of this configuration
~19
Comfortable for a full evening with movement and bags
Forward-facing coach seats are sized close to their rated capacity, so 20 seated is realistic for a transfer. Leave a seat or two spare if people are carrying coats, bags or equipment on board rather than putting them in the bay.
At this size
What a group of 20 looks like on the day
Twenty is the size most groups mean when they say "a party bus", and the headcount a bachelor party, a 30th birthday or a bar crawl most often settles at once the list is confirmed. It is large enough that one named contact has to own the count, because two people wandering off at a stop is invisible in a group this size until the bus is about to leave. The vehicle no longer fits a hotel porte-cochere or a tight residential street, so pickup points get agreed in advance.
At this capacity the vehicle is a mini-coach built on a cutaway chassis: forward-facing rows with an aisle, overhead racks, a single passenger door with steps, and either a small rear luggage area or none. There is no restroom at this size. It carries a small group in coach comfort to places a full-size motorcoach cannot reach, and it is the usual answer for a campus, a camp or a country venue.
- 20 seats is 5 rows of four, each row with its own window pair and overhead rack.
- A 120-guest wedding block moves in 6 rotations on this vehicle and a 60-guest block in 3; each rotation is a full round trip between hotel and venue, so the loop time sets the arrival window.
- 20 is 2 tables of eight plus 4, so a dinner group that fills this vehicle usually has a part-table of plus-ones.
Driver licensing
What licence this size requires
At 20 passengers plus a driver, this vehicle is designed to carry 21 people, which puts it over the federal 16-person line in 49 CFR 383.5. Your chauffeur holds a commercial driver's license with a passenger (P) endorsement, and when the route crosses a state line we run it under active interstate operating authority with our USDOT number on file. That is not something you have to chase us for โ it is on the paperwork.
Seating and restraints
Seating layout and seat belts
Forward-facing reclining rows with three-point or lap belts on the newer coaches, a center aisle and overhead racks. Restrooms are standard on the full-size coaches and not fitted on the mini-coaches, so on a long route we will tell you which one you are getting and where the comfort stops fall.
Luggage
What you can actually bring
Full-size coaches carry luggage in underfloor bays, which is why this class handles airport runs, tours and multi-day trips without anyone hugging a suitcase. Mini-coaches at the lower capacities often have no bay and take bags in the rear rows instead. Tell us how many bags are coming and we will size the vehicle so nobody loses a seat to a duffel.

One size either way
Should you size up or down?
Size down
18 Passenger Coach Bus
2 fewer seats. Worth comparing if your confirmed count is closer to 18: easier to route and park, and no empty seats on the bill.
Size up
22 Passenger Coach Bus
2 more seats. Worth comparing if the list could grow past 20, or if you want room for bags and movement rather than a full cabin.
